Tidemark Institute President and Senior Scholar, Jean Moon, is engaged in a successful collaboration with Sarah Michaels (Clark University) and Brian J. Reiser (Northwestern University). This collaboration has resulted in a web-based professional learning environment – the Next Generation Science Exemplar project (ngsx.org). Together, in face-to-face study groups, NGSX participants actively work with major ideas found in the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards. Participants learn to use knowledge building tools and strategies, including classroom-based video cases and storyline-based instructional materials, to take this new vision back into their classrooms and buildings.
NGSX also serves as a research site to collect data on 3-dimensional learning and the enactment of that learning in classrooms. In addition, the NGSX professional learning system has developed a learning pathway for facilitators. It provides a curriculum of learning for teacher leaders, instructional coaches, and PD providers who want to become NGSX study group facilitators in their district or state. A focus on preparing facilitators to lead NGSX study groups is a much needed model of peer-leadership in professional learning to bring the Framework and NGSS to scale.
